Refreshing in Update Manager now completes successfully, but it takes a long time (5 to 10 minutes). There are a lot of "Ign" tags (Ignored?) in the output (the last of which seems to match the one specific problem noted in the "Could not refresh." error at the start of this, and the other Ign tags look like they match up with the Failed items when refreshing the cache in Software Sources). It didn't work before I repeated all this to ask here. That now APPEARS (to me) to have succeeded (I haven't tried the "apt-get autoremove" thing yet).
